GRE Data Interpretation: practice sets that mirror the real test

Data Interpretation is the GRE quant question type that punishes fast, careless reading and rewards a calm, organized approach. One chart or table feeds a whole set of questions, so a single misread costs you several points at once. This guide shows how the sets work, the reading method that saves time, the percentage traps that catch strong test takers, and a full interactive practice set with worked solutions.

Data Interpretation questions come in sets: one data display (charts, graphs, or tables) followed by two or three questions that all use it. The math is basic, mostly percentages, ratios, and averages, but the traps are real. Read the title, axes, and units first, estimate before you calculate, and watch the difference between percent change and percentage points. How Data Interpretation sets work

Unlike a standalone quant problem, a Data Interpretation question never appears alone. You are shown one data display, sometimes a single chart and sometimes two or three displays together, and then a small set of questions built on that data. Each Quant section usually contains at least one such set.

That structure is the key to the strategy. Because the same data serves two or three questions, the time you spend understanding it once is repaid every time. A careless first read, on the other hand, quietly costs you points across the entire set. The skill being tested is not calculation. It is accurate reading and clean arithmetic under time pressure.

In 2025, what is the ratio of Engineering applications to Arts applications?

Answer: 2 to 1. From the 2025 table, Engineering received 300 applications and Arts received 150. The ratio is \(300 : 150\), which simplifies to \(2 : 1\). Watch the direction the question asks for: Engineering to Arts, not Arts to Engineering.

Set question 2 of 3 - percent of total

In 2025, Business applications were approximately what percent of the total applications that year?

Answer: 30%. Business received 225 applications out of a 2025 total of 750. \(\frac{225}{750} = 0.30\), or 30%. The total, 750, comes from the bar chart, while the 225 comes from the table, so this question needs both displays.

Set question 3 of 3 - percent change

From 2023 to 2024, the total number of applications increased by approximately what percent?

Answer: 33%. Applications rose from 450 in 2023 to 600 in 2024, an increase of 150. Percent change is measured against the starting value: \(\frac{600-450}{450} = \frac{150}{450} \approx 0.333\), or about 33%. The trap is dividing by 600 instead of 450; percent change always uses the earlier number as the base.

How do GRE Data Interpretation questions work?

Data Interpretation questions come in sets. You are shown one data display, such as a bar chart, a table, a pie chart, or several together, and then two or three questions that all draw on that same data. They appear in the Quantitative Reasoning section.

How many Data Interpretation questions are on the GRE?

Each Quantitative Reasoning section typically includes at least one Data Interpretation set of two or three questions. Because the questions share one data display, understanding the data well pays off across the whole set.

Can you use a calculator on Data Interpretation?

Data Interpretation questions often test whether you can tell the two apart.

What math does GRE Data Interpretation test?

Mostly percentages, ratios, averages, and careful reading of charts and tables. There is no advanced math. The difficulty comes from reading the display accurately, combining more than one source, and avoiding arithmetic traps under time pressure.
