GRE Numeric Entry: how to solve it

Numeric Entry is the GRE quant question type with no answer choices. You solve the problem and type your own answer into a box, which means you cannot guess from options or work backward from them. This guide covers how the answer box works, the fraction and sign rules that quietly cost points, the two-step solve-then-format method, the traps that catch strong math students, and interactive practice with full solutions.

🎯 The short version

A Numeric Entry question gives you no answer choices. You solve the problem and type the answer into a box, or into two boxes for a fraction. The habits that matter: solve the math fully first, then read the answer format, round only at the end and only when asked, enter a fraction in the fraction box without reducing it, include a negative sign when the answer is below zero, and transcribe your result exactly. The on-screen calculator is available, but a correct answer typed wrong still scores zero.

What Numeric Entry asks

Most GRE quant questions hand you five answer choices. Numeric Entry does not. You are asked to find a value and type it into an answer box yourself, with no options to pick from and nothing to eliminate. That single difference changes the strategy: you cannot plug the choices back in, and a careless misread has no wrong option to flag it, so accuracy and careful entry carry the whole question.

The answer goes into one of two formats:

The answer box rules that quietly cost points

Numeric Entry removes the answer choices, which changes how you should work. There is nothing to eliminate and nothing to work backward from, so the whole question comes down to solving correctly and entering the result in the exact form the question wants. A few rules do most of the damage when they are missed:

The method: solve first, then format

Because there are no choices to lean on, the reliable approach is a clean two-step habit. First, engage with the problem and solve it fully, the same way you would if no answer box existed. Understand what the question is actually asking rather than pattern-matching to a formula, because a small misreading has no wrong answer choice to warn you. Second, once you have the value, read the answer instruction again and enter the result in exactly that form.

Worked example

A company's monthly revenue rose from 80,000 to 92,000 dollars. By what percent did revenue increase? Round your answer to the nearest whole percent.

Find the change first: \(92{,}000 - 80{,}000 = 12{,}000\). Divide the change by the original amount: \(12{,}000 \div 80{,}000 = 0.15\). As a percent that is 15 percent, which is already a whole number, so it rounds to \(15\).

Answer: 15. Notice the two-step discipline. You solve the math, then read the format. The question wants a percent rounded to a whole number, so you enter 15, not 0.15 and not the words 15 percent. The box is looking for the number 15.

A bookstore sold 240 books on Monday. On Tuesday it sold 15 percent more than it did on Monday. How many books did the bookstore sell on Tuesday?

Answer: 276. A 15 percent increase means Tuesday's total is \(240 \times 1.15 = 276\). You can also compute the increase alone, \(240 \times 0.15 = 36\), then add it back: \(240 + 36 = 276\). There is a single box and the answer is a whole number, so type 276 with no comma and no decimal.

In a survey of 640 students, 208 said they commute by train. What fraction of the students surveyed commute by train? Enter your answer as a fraction.

Answer: any fraction equal to \(\frac{208}{640}\). The direct entry is \(\frac{208}{640}\). You do not have to reduce it, so \(\frac{208}{640}\), \(\frac{13}{40}\), and \(\frac{26}{80}\) are all scored correct because they are equal in value. Numeric Entry accepts any equivalent fraction, which means you can skip the reducing step and save time.

A runner covers 8 kilometers in 27 minutes at a steady pace. What is her average pace in minutes per kilometer, rounded to the nearest tenth?

Answer: 3.4. Pace is time divided by distance: \(27 \div 8 = 3.375\) minutes per kilometer. The question asks you to round to the nearest tenth, and because the hundredths digit is 7, you round 3.375 up to \(3.4\). Rounding only at the end, and only when the question asks for it, is the whole skill here. Entering 3.375 would be marked wrong even though the arithmetic was right.

If \(2x + 9 = 3\), what is the value of \(x\)?

Answer: -3. Subtract 9 from both sides: \(2x = 3 - 9 = -6\). Divide by 2: \(x = -3\). The box accepts a negative sign, so type -3 directly. Dropping the negative sign is one of the most common Numeric Entry errors, so always check whether your answer should be below zero before you enter it.

What is GRE Numeric Entry?

Numeric Entry is a GRE Quant question type with no answer choices. You solve the problem and type your own numerical answer into a box. Some answers go in a single box for an integer or decimal, and fraction answers go in two boxes, one for the numerator and one for the denominator.

Do you have to reduce fractions on Numeric Entry?

Where does Numeric Entry appear on the GRE?
