You are cruising through the Quant section, you hit one problem that will not crack, you dig in because you are sure you can get it, and by the time you look up you have burned four minutes on a single question. Now you are behind. You rush the next three, make a careless error you would never normally make, and with two minutes left you are clicking answers on the last five questions without really reading them. You walk out convinced of one thing: if you just had more time, you would have crushed it.
Here is the uncomfortable truth, and it is the single most useful thing anyone will tell you about GMAT pacing. For most test takers, running out of time is not the disease. It is a symptom. The disease is almost always shaky mastery of the underlying concepts. If you truly owned the material, you would be fast, because you would see the shortcut instead of grinding out the long way.
This is not a motivational slogan. It is what the exam maker itself says. To be fair and accurate, some of your timing problem is genuinely about strategy, not knowledge. There is a real, learnable pacing skill, and it lives almost entirely in a few decisions. It helps to know exactly how the modern exam is built, because the 2026 format changed the math on all of this.
According to mba.com, the GMAT Focus Edition runs 2 hours and 15 minutes and has three sections of 45 minutes each: Quantitative Reasoning with 21 questions, Verbal Reasoning with 23 questions, and Data Insights with 20 questions. Two features of the Focus format matter enormously for pacing, and a lot of test takers do not use them:
First, at the end of each section you can review your work and change up to three answers, as long as you have not run out of time. GMAC describes this bookmark and edit feature on mba.com as a way to bank points you were unsure about. If you are burning your last minutes instead of protecting a window to review three flagged questions, you are leaving points on the table.
Second, an unanswered question hurts your score more than a wrong answer. That single rule dictates the correct end game: never leave a question blank, and never let one hard question cost you the chance to answer three easy ones later.
From those facts, the entire legitimate pacing skill reduces to a short list:
Learn those four things and you will stop the most obvious bleeding. But notice how small that list is. If pacing strategy were the whole story, everyone who read the list above would hit their target score. They do not. Because the four rules only help you manage time you are spending well. They do nothing about the time you are spending because you do not know the concept cold. That is the bigger problem, and it is where the real points are.
Here is a mechanic many test takers do not fully grasp, and it should shape how you pace. On the GMAT Focus you cannot skip a question. The exam forces you to select an answer before it lets you advance to the next one, so you can never leave a blank in the middle of a section. The only way to finish a section with unanswered questions is to run out of time before you reach the last ones.
That is the single most damaging thing you can do to your score. As GMAC's own materials and every major prep source agree, an unreached question is penalized far more harshly than a wrong answer, and that penalty is applied after your correct answers are counted, so it can erase the points you fought hardest to earn. So the real goal is not to answer every question perfectly. It is to reach every question. When you hit a wall, take your best guess, bookmark it, and move on, because a guess is infinitely better than a question you never reach. And if you are on the final question with the clock nearly gone, click any answer immediately, even before you finish thinking, so that a choice is recorded rather than left blank.
Now connect it back. What makes you run out of time and strand the last three questions? Spending three minutes on a problem you did not know how to solve. The unreached-question penalty is not really a pacing failure. It is a mastery failure with a pacing failure stapled to the end of it. Fix the mastery and you reach every question with time to spare.
Let us make this concrete with a single problem type. Try this question yourself before reading the analysis, and pay attention to how long it takes you:
The function is defined by , where and are constants. If , what is the value of ?
The slow wayPlug in 4: . That is one equation with two unknowns, and . You cannot solve it. So you try again, you stare, you wonder if the question is broken, and three minutes vanish before you guess.
The shortcut is an odd function, so its values at and are exact opposites that cancel. That means , twice the constant term. So .
Knew the odd-function trick? Fifteen seconds. Did not? Two minutes and a guess. Same question, same clock. The only variable was whether you owned the concept.
That widget just demonstrated the entire argument of this section. If you solved it in under thirty seconds, you recognized the hidden property. If you spent two minutes setting up equations, you experienced the mastery gap firsthand.

The unprepared student is slow. And no amount of clock discipline would have saved the first student, because their pen was moving the whole time. They did not have a time management problem. They had a mastery problem wearing a time management costume.
Now here is the good news. This pattern repeats across the whole exam. Once you learn to see it, you stop treating "I ran out of time" as a mysterious affliction and start treating it as a diagnosis you can act on. There are five traps where this happens most, and each one has a specific cure.
This is the purest version of the problem, and it lives mostly in Quant. The question looks like it demands heavy computation, but it actually hides a single property that collapses the whole thing. If you know the property, it is a fifteen second question. If you do not, it is a three minute slog with a coin flip at the end.
You already saw one example with the odd function. Here are two more in the same family.
Parity of primes. Try this one. The whole question turns on a single memorized property:
Two different prime numbers are chosen at random from the first six primes: . What is the probability that their sum is odd?
The slow wayYou start listing pairs and adding them: , , , and so on through all fifteen combinations, hoping not to miscount. A minute and a half later you are still adding.
The shortcutA sum of two numbers is odd only when one is even and one is odd. Among primes, 2 is the only even number. So the sum is odd only when one of the picks is . There are 5 such pairs out of , which is .
One memorized fact, that 2 is the only even prime, turned a fifteen-combination slog into a five-second answer.
Factorial structure. Same pattern, different property. The prepared student sees it in seconds:
Let be a positive integer. Which expression is equal to ?
The slow wayYou plug in a number for , compute two factorials, subtract the fractions, then test each of five answer choices against your result. Two minutes gone, and you are not even sure your arithmetic was right.
The shortcutThe two terms share a factorial, because . Factor it out and the expression collapses in one line to . No numbers needed.
Recognizing the shared factorial structure is the whole question. See it and you are done in twenty seconds. Miss it and you brute-force it for two minutes.
In every case, the length of the question is identical for both students. The time is decided entirely by pattern recognition. This is exactly what structured, timed GMAT drilling builds. It trains you to see the property before you start computing, so the shortcut becomes a reflex rather than a lucky discovery. The cure for this "time problem" is not a stopwatch. It is repetition until recognition is automatic.
This trap lives in Quant word problems, and it is subtle because the arithmetic is usually easy. The time drains during the translation from English into equations. Shaky students read the problem three times, set it up wrong, get a nonsense answer, and start over. Fluent students translate it once, cleanly, and solve.
Try translating this word problem into equations. The math is trivial. The skill is the clean, one pass translation:
A dealer sells a lamp at a price that is 4 dollars less than twice its cost. If the dealer's profit on the lamp is 20 dollars, what is the cost of the lamp?
The slow wayYou read the sentence three times, get tangled in "4 less than twice," set it up wrong, get a number that is not an answer choice, and start over. The arithmetic is easy. The translation is where your time died.
The shortcutWrite the price as . Profit is price minus cost, so . Set , so the cost is 24 dollars. One clean translation, one line of algebra.
The math here is trivial. The skill is translating words into equations once, cleanly, instead of thrashing. That is trained by reps and a mistake log, not by reading faster.
The same tax shows up in interest problems, mixture problems, rate problems, and geometry problems that bury a simple relationship inside a wordy setup. The fix is a disciplined practice routine with a running log of every question you set up wrong, hunting for the pattern in your own errors. Your personal time sinks are not random. They cluster. Now we move to Verbal, where the trap changes shape. In Reading Comprehension, a dense passage on an unfamiliar topic can eat eight minutes across its questions if you read it badly the first time. Every question sends you back into the text to hunt for the answer, and each hunt costs thirty seconds you do not have.
Picture a passage that lays out a scholarly debate: an old standard, a newer challenger standard, and the reasons some experts prefer the challenger. The unprepared reader absorbs the words without the structure, so when a question asks about the primary purpose or what the author would be least likely to expect, they have to re-read the whole thing. The prepared reader maps the architecture on the first pass. Paragraph one, the old standard and why it exists. Paragraph two, the challenger and its claimed advantages. They note where each idea lives. When the questions come, they already know exactly where to look, and they barely revisit the text.
That is not reading faster. It is reading with structure, which is a trainable skill. The re-read spiral is a comprehension problem, not a timing problem, and the cure is deliberate practice at mapping a passage's logical structure on the first read.
If English is not your first language, this trap hits twice as hard, because you are paying a reading speed tax on top of the structure tax. Also in Verbal, Critical Reasoning questions punish a specific bad habit: diving into the answer choices without a plan. Boldface questions, flaw questions, and assumption questions all present five dense, abstract answer choices, and if you have not decided what you are looking for before you read them, you will test all five against the argument and lose two minutes doing it.
Take a boldface question, where you must describe the role that two highlighted statements play in an argument. The unprepared student reads the argument, then reads five convoluted descriptions and tries each one on for size, going back and forth, second guessing. The prepared student first identifies the pieces themselves: this first bold statement is an observation the argument wants to explain, and this second one is the conclusion. Having pre phrased the roles in plain language, they scan the five choices for the one that matches what they already decided, and they are done in under a minute. The choices did not get easier. The method got faster.
The same discipline applies to flaw questions, where you name the reasoning error before you read the options, and to assumption questions, where you predict the missing link first. Pre phrasing is a method, and method beats time. This is trained by working Critical Reasoning sets and forcing yourself to articulate the answer before looking at the choices.
Finally, Data Insights, the section built specifically to punish poor time management, which is precisely why mastery matters most here. DI throws multi source prompts at you: a graph plus a passage, a sortable table, a scatter plot, a two part analysis. The trap is reading everything before you know what you actually need.
Imagine a prompt with a page of text about soil temperatures at different depths and a graph of those temperatures across the year, followed by a question that only asks about the value at one depth on one day. The unprepared student reads the entire passage, studies the whole graph, and only then looks at the question, having spent two minutes absorbing information they did not need. The prepared student reads the question first, goes straight to the one curve and the one day that matter, reads that single value, and answers. Then, if there is a second question on the same exhibit, they read only the new thing it requires.
That is triage, and it is the core DI skill. Read the question, decide what you need, extract only that, ignore the rest until a later question demands it. Data sufficiency questions reward the same discipline: you are deciding whether the information is enough, not solving for the final number, and students who forget that solve all the way through and blow their time. Here is the practical part. The next time you take a full length practice test, do not just look at your score. Do a timing autopsy. For every question you got wrong or nearly ran out of time on, ask one question: was I slow because I did not know how to do it, or slow because I knew how but managed the clock badly?
Sort your slow questions into two piles.
The mastery pile: questions where you did not see the shortcut, could not set up the problem, did not know the property, or had to re-read because you did not understand it. Almost everyone discovers that the mastery pile is far larger than they expected. That is the whole point. A mistake log turns this autopsy into a system: log every slow question, tag it mastery or method, and watch the clusters emerge. Your slowness is not random. It has a shape, and once you can see the shape, you can fix it.
Running out of time on the GMAT is real, and it is painful, and it is almost never actually about the clock. The clock is a mirror. It shows you exactly which concepts you do not yet own.
