TOEFL 2026 in Spain:
Complete Preparation Guide

Who this guide is for: students in Spain who need TOEFL for an exchange program at a US or UK university, for admission to an English-taught master's or MBA at IE, ESADE, IESE, or Pompeu Fabra, or for direct application to universities abroad. Whether you are in Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao, Granada, Malaga, or anywhere else in Spain, this guide covers your score target, your nearest test center, and exactly how to prepare for the 2026 format. Written by educators based in Barcelona who have been preparing Spanish students for TOEFL since 2010.

Why Spanish students need TOEFL in 2026

Spain has one of the most internationally mobile student populations in Europe. Erasmus exchanges, US university exchange programs, MBA applications at global business schools, and direct applications to universities in the UK, Netherlands, and the US all increasingly require a standardized English proficiency certificate. For most of these purposes, TOEFL is accepted — and for many US-focused applications, it is preferred.

The students who contact us most frequently from Spain fall into three distinct groups. The first are students at Pompeu Fabra, ESADE, IE, and other universities with strong international exchange networks who need TOEFL to unlock access to partner universities in the US. The second are professionals and recent graduates applying to MBA and master's programs at IE Business School, ESADE, or IESE — or to international business schools abroad. The third are students applying directly to universities in the US or UK from Spanish secondary schools or universities.

All three situations require the same foundation: a strong TOEFL 2026 score, prepared for efficiently and targeted precisely at the specific band required by your destination.

Exchange programs: the opportunity most students underestimate

The exchange program pathway is one of the most strategically valuable uses of a TOEFL score for a Spanish student. A semester or year at a US partner university — accessible directly through your Spanish institution's exchange network — costs a fraction of what direct enrollment would cost, while building the same international academic credential and network.

Pompeu Fabra University, consistently ranked among Europe's top young universities, maintains exchange partnerships with universities across the US. According to UPF's international mobility requirements, non-native English speakers applying for exchange destinations in the US are required to demonstrate English proficiency through TOEFL or IELTS. The minimum band for most US exchange destinations through UPF is 4.0 to 4.5 on the 2026 scale, with the most competitive destinations requiring 4.5 or above.

ESADE's undergraduate programs and exchange network similarly require official English proficiency accreditation — and TOEFL is explicitly listed as an accepted certificate. Students at IE University, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Universidad de Navarra, and virtually every major Spanish university with a US exchange partnership face the same requirement.

The strategic advantage of preparing now TOEFL scores are valid for two years from your test date. A student who takes the TOEFL in their first or second year of university builds a credential that covers exchange program applications, MBA applications, and any direct international applications that arise during that two-year window. Preparing early means you never find yourself scrambling for a score with a tight deadline.

What changed in TOEFL 2026 — why Spanish students need to know

The TOEFL iBT was completely redesigned on January 21, 2026. If you studied for TOEFL before that date or are using older preparation materials, a significant portion of what you practised no longer applies to the current exam.

The test now takes approximately 90 minutes — significantly shorter than the previous version. Reading and Listening use a new adaptive format. The Speaking section was rebuilt entirely: zero preparation time, two completely new task types (Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview), and all responses scored by the ETS AI engine. Writing replaced its long essays with three shorter practical tasks: Build a Sentence, Write an Email, and Academic Discussion. Results arrive within 72 hours of your test date.

For Spanish students specifically, two aspects of the 2026 format require particular attention. The new Speaking section — especially Take an Interview — demands spontaneous, natural spoken English with no preparation time. Spanish students who have strong academic English but limited practice with spontaneous spoken responses in English frequently find this the most challenging part of the new format. It is also the section where targeted preparation produces the fastest visible improvement.

The new Writing tasks are in many ways more aligned with real-world academic English use than the old format — particularly Write an Email and Academic Discussion, which mirror the kind of English communication Spanish students will need from day one in an international academic environment. What we know about Spanish students and TOEFL

After 15 years of preparing students across Spain for TOEFL, we have a clear picture of where Spanish students typically start and where they most need to focus their preparation time.

Spanish students at universities like Pompeu Fabra, ESADE, IE, and Carlos III tend to have solid academic English — strong reading comprehension, reasonable grammar accuracy, and often good listening skills from years of exposure to English-language media. The academic content of TOEFL Reading and Listening is rarely the main obstacle.

The consistent challenges are Speaking and, to a lesser extent, Writing. The new Take an Interview task requires 45 seconds of spontaneous organized spoken English with no preparation time — a format that most Spanish students have almost no practice with, regardless of their English level. And the Write an Email task requires register awareness and precise professional English communication that formal academic study does not always develop.

The students who improve fastest in Spain are those who combine daily speaking practice with genuine feedback — not just recording themselves, but having an expert identify the specific patterns that are costing them points. The habits that feel comfortable in preparation are often not the ones that score well. An experienced TOEFL teacher catches this quickly. Self-study alone rarely does.

What 15 years of preparing Spanish students for TOEFL taught us Spanish students consistently underestimate their own English level and overestimate how much time they need. Most students at UPF, ESADE, IE, or Pompeu Fabra who come to us thinking they need six months typically need eight to twelve weeks with focused preparation. The gap between their starting level and their target band is almost always smaller than they fear. What requires real investment is Speaking — specifically the spontaneous interview format that has no equivalent in Spanish classroom English. That is where the preparation time goes and where a great teacher earns their value. Do not spend twelve weeks drilling the wrong things. Start with a diagnostic, find your real gap, and target your preparation precisely.

How to prepare for TOEFL 2026 in Spain

  1. 1

Take a free diagnostic assessment before anything else

Your starting score is the most important piece of information in your preparation plan. Without it, you are guessing at how much time you need and which sections to prioritize. Our free TOEFL 2026 diagnostic at toefl.prepdrills.com takes 25 to 30 minutes, covers all four sections including Speaking with a microphone, and gives you an honest baseline score. Take it before you book your test date or plan your preparation schedule.

  2. 2

Book your test date as soon as you have a target window

Barcelona and Madrid test centers fill up fast in October, November, March, and May. Book your date before you start your preparation — having a fixed deadline is the single most effective accountability mechanism available. If no center slots are available in your timeline, book the Home Edition instead. Register at ets.org/toefl/test-takers/ibt/register.html. You can also check current test dates in Spain at epicexamprep.com/toefl/toefl-exam-dates.

  3. 3

    Prioritize Speaking from day one

The new Take an Interview task is where most Spanish students lose the most points — and where focused daily practice produces the fastest improvement. Practice answering opinion questions spontaneously for 45 seconds every day. Record yourself. Listen back. Focus specifically on filling the full time, maintaining a natural pace, and organizing your response clearly without a memorized template. The ETS AI scoring engine rewards natural, organized speech — not scripted delivery.

  4. 4

    Practice the 2026 format specifically

Every Speaking and Writing task type in TOEFL 2026 is new. Pre-2026 materials — including preparation courses that have not been updated — prepare you for tasks that no longer exist in the current exam. Use preparation resources specifically built for the 2026 format. Our TOEFL 2026 practice app at toefl.prepdrills.com covers all new task types with AI feedback on Speaking and Writing, updated for the January 2026 redesign.

  5. 5

Work with a teacher for Speaking and Writing

AI feedback tells you your score and identifies patterns. A great TOEFL teacher tells you why those patterns exist and gives you the targeted correction that actually changes them. For students targeting band 4.5 or above — the threshold for most exchange programs, MBA applications, and US university admission from Spain — at least a few sessions with a certified TOEFL teacher who knows the 2026 format significantly accelerates progress. Epic Exam Prep is based in Barcelona and has been preparing students across Spain for TOEFL since 2010, with one-to-one sessions and monthly group courses for students in Barcelona, Madrid, and across Spain online.
