The new scoring scale: how it works
On January 21, 2026, ETS replaced the 0 to 120 TOEFL scoring system with a 1.0 to 6.0 band scale. According to ETS's official score information page, each of the four sections — Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing — receives its own band score from 1.0 to 6.0 in 0.5 increments. Your overall score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5.
For example: if you score Reading 5.0, Listening 4.5, Speaking 4.5, and Writing 4.0, your average is 4.5 — which is your overall band. There is no longer a total that adds up. Every section carries equal weight in your final score.
During the transition period from January 2026 to January 2028, every TOEFL score report shows three things: your CEFR level, your 1.0 to 6.0 band score, and a comparable 0 to 120 score. Universities can read all three formats. You do not need to convert manually when sending scores — the report does it for you.

Why section scores matter as much as your overall band
Many students focus entirely on their overall band and overlook section scores — which is a costly mistake. A growing number of universities set minimum section requirements in addition to an overall band, and a weak section score can disqualify your application even when your overall band meets the threshold.
Speaking section minimums
Programs requiring oral communication — MBA programs, law, medicine, and teaching assistant roles — often set a minimum Speaking band of 4.0 to 4.5 regardless of your overall score. Some US graduate programs require Speaking 4.5 for students in teaching assistant roles.
Writing section minimums
Programs with significant written communication demands — MBA, humanities, social sciences, and research programs — often require Writing 4.0 or above. Imperial College London sets a specific Writing minimum alongside the overall score requirement.
Reading and Listening
Few programs set explicit section minimums for Reading and Listening, but a significantly weak score in either section pulls your overall band down substantially since all four sections carry equal weight.
The balanced score principle
A band of 4.5 with balanced sections (4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5) is stronger than a 4.5 with one section at 3.5. MBA programs in particular review section profiles, not just overall bands. Always aim for balance across all four sections.

Score benchmarks by program type
Beyond specific institutions, your target band depends heavily on what kind of program you are applying for. Here is a practical framework based on published requirements and competitive application data.
| Program Type | Typical Min. Band | Competitive Band |
|---|---|---|
| Top US/UK undergraduate (Ivy League, Russell Group) | 5.0 | 5.0 to 5.5 |
| Top MBA programs globally (Harvard, INSEAD, LBS) | 5.0 | 5.0 to 5.5 |
| European business schools (IESE, ESADE, HEC, Bocconi) | 4.5 | 4.5 to 5.0 |
| Strong US graduate programs (top 50) | 4.5 | 4.5 to 5.0 |
| Strong European universities (Netherlands, Germany, Denmark) | 4.0 to 4.5 | 4.5 |
| Mid-tier international universities | 4.0 | 4.0 to 4.5 |
| Foundation and pathway programs | 3.5 to 4.0 | 4.0 |
What "minimum" actually means — and why you should always aim higher
Every score table in this guide shows minimum requirements. But minimum and competitive are two different things — and for the most selective institutions, the gap between them is significant.
A minimum TOEFL score means your application will not be disqualified on language grounds. It does not mean you will be admitted. Admissions committees consider TOEFL alongside GPA, essays, recommendations, work experience, and in many cases, interview performance. A minimum TOEFL score with a strong application in every other area is perfectly viable. A minimum TOEFL score as the ceiling of your performance signals to admissions teams that English may be a limitation once you are in the program.
The practical rule: target at least 0.5 bands above the published minimum for your program. If the minimum is 4.5, aim for 5.0. If the minimum is 5.0, aim for 5.5. This gives you a genuine buffer, demonstrates proficiency above the threshold, and removes any concern from admissions reviewers about your ability to function in an English-medium academic environment.
Score validity and the 2026 to 2028 transition
TOEFL scores are valid for two years from your test date. A score from January 2025 is valid until January 2027. A score from May 2026 is valid until May 2028. There is no reduced validity for scores taken before or after the January 2026 format change.
If you hold a pre-2026 score on the old 0 to 120 scale, universities can still accept it during its two-year validity window. Your score report on the old scale is clearly dated, and institutions have access to ETS conversion guidance. You do not need to retake just because the format changed — unless your score has expired or no longer meets updated requirements at your target institution.
For tests taken after January 21, 2026, score reports automatically include the 1.0 to 6.0 band, the comparable 0 to 120 score, and your CEFR level. University admissions teams can read all three formats during the transition period. After January 2028, only the band and CEFR level will appear.
