Why TOEFL matters for France's top institutions
France's grandes écoles and leading business schools are among the most internationally recognized institutions in the world. INSEAD, HEC Paris, Sciences Po, ESSEC, EDHEC, and EMLYON consistently appear in top global rankings, and all of them require non-native English speakers to demonstrate English proficiency for their English-taught programs.
TOEFL is accepted across all of these institutions and is in many cases the preferred test for applicants coming from non-English-speaking countries. For students also considering applications to US universities, UK institutions, or other European business schools simultaneously, TOEFL is the most strategically versatile credential available — one score, valid for two years, accepted by over 12,000 institutions worldwide.
France's position as a global hub for international business education makes TOEFL preparation an investment that pays across multiple application cycles. A strong TOEFL score is not just a box to check for one program — it is a durable credential that supports your entire international academic and professional ambition.
INSEAD: the world's most international business school
INSEAD's Fontainebleau campus, located in the Forest of Fontainebleau approximately one hour south of Paris, is home to one of the most internationally diverse MBA programs in the world — a typical incoming class represents over 75 nationalities. The program's ten-month intensity, multi-campus structure (Fontainebleau, Singapore, Abu Dhabi), and uniquely demanding language requirements make it unlike any other business school on earth.
According to INSEAD's official MBA admissions page, non-native English speakers are required to submit a valid TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic score. INSEAD does not publish a single minimum TOEFL score — instead, it assesses candidates holistically and expects applicants to demonstrate the English fluency required to participate meaningfully in an intensive, discussion-based, multilingual learning environment.
For the INSEAD Master in Management program, INSEAD's official MIM academic performance page states that the recommended TOEFL score is 103 or above. TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the test date.

What changed in TOEFL 2026 — and why it matters
The TOEFL iBT was completely redesigned on January 21, 2026. If you are using preparation materials from before that date, a significant portion of what you have been practicing no longer reflects the current exam. The test is now approximately 90 minutes — significantly shorter than the previous version. Reading and Listening use a new adaptive format. The Speaking section was completely rebuilt with two entirely new tasks: Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview. Writing replaced its long essays with three shorter practical tasks. Results are delivered within approximately 72 hours.
For students targeting INSEAD, HEC Paris, and Sciences Po, the Speaking section deserves particular attention. The Take an Interview task requires four spontaneous spoken responses of 45 seconds each with zero preparation time. This is genuinely different from the old TOEFL format, which included preparation time for every Speaking task. The scoring engine specifically penalizes memorized templates and rewards natural, organized spontaneous speech.
For students preparing specifically for INSEAD, there is an interesting parallel worth noting: INSEAD's own Kira Talent video assessment — four video questions with 45 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to respond — uses a format remarkably similar to TOEFL Take an Interview. Strong preparation for TOEFL Speaking directly prepares you for the INSEAD video assessment as well. Source: ets.org/toefl/test-takers/ibt/about.html

Focus Speaking practice on spontaneous responses
The Take an Interview task has zero preparation time and rewards natural, organized spontaneous speech. For students targeting INSEAD's recommended score of 103 or HEC's minimum of 100 — both equivalent to approximately band 5.0 on the 2026 scale — Speaking is the section where preparation time has the highest return. Record yourself answering opinion questions spontaneously for 45 seconds every day. Listen back. Focus on answering directly in your first sentence and filling the full time with organized content.
