“The minimum requirement is an overall score of 4.5 with 4.5 in Writing and 4.0 in Speaking. For applicants who completed the test before January 21, 2026 , the minimum requirement is a total score of 89 with 22 in each of Speaking and Writing. Applicants must achieve the scores listed above on a single date. TOEFL MyBest (super-scored) results will not be used.”
Home Edition and Paper Edition are accepted; TOEFL Essentials and ITP are not. IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. Scores must be sent electronically by ETS (institution code 0982-00).
School of Graduate Studies (all four divisions)
“Humanities Overall Score: 93 Writing / Speaking: 22 Overall Score: 4.5 Writing: 4.5 Speaking: 4.0 ... *Consult the department to which you are applying to determine if a minimum higher score is required. ... Note : We do not accept TOEFL MyBest scores.”
The same 93 / 4.5 minimum is listed for all four SGS divisions (Humanities, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences). Departments may require more. IELTS 7.0 with at least 6.5 in each component. Institution code 0982.
Full-Time MBA

How the new 1 to 6 scale applies to U of T
Since January 21, 2026, TOEFL iBT scores are reported in bands from 1 to 6. Each band covers a range of old scores, so the same old minimum can sit anywhere inside a band.
- For Undergraduate, U of T asks for 89 on the old scale. On the ETS comparison, 89 falls in band 4.5 (which starts at 86; CEFR B2). U of T itself publishes band 4.5, which matches.
- For School of Graduate Studies (all four divisions), U of T asks for 93 on the old scale. On the ETS comparison, 93 falls in band 4.5 (which starts at 86; CEFR B2). U of T itself publishes band 4.5, which matches.

What score should you aim for?
Our advice (not an official U of T rule): treat the published number as a floor. Aim half a band above the minimum for your program, so for a band 4.5 requirement plan for 5.0 on your practice tests, so one weaker section on test day does not take your overall score under the line. Check section minimums too: an overall band can hide a low Speaking or Writing score.
