What does each new TOEFL band score equal on the old 0-120 scale?

The table below reproduces the official ETS concordance. It shows how each new TOEFL band (1.0 to 6.0) maps to the old 0-120 total score and the old 0-30 section scores.

Why does my TOEFL score report show a single 0-120 number even though my band maps to a range?

During the 2026-2028 dual-reporting transition period, ETS includes a "comparable" 0-120 score on every score report alongside your new 1-6 band. This comparable score is the midpoint of the old-scale range that corresponds to your band. It is not the bottom or top of the range.

For example, band 4.5 corresponds to the old score range of 86 to 94. The midpoint of that range is 90. So your score report will show a comparable score of approximately 90. This helps institutions that still publish old-scale minimums evaluate your result during the transition.

It is important to understand that the comparable score is an approximation, not an exact translation. Two students with the same band of 4.5 will both see a comparable score near 90, even if one was at the stronger end and the other at the weaker end of that band.

How do I convert TOEFL section scores from 0-30 to the new 1-6 scale?

Section scores convert differently for each section. Reading 28 maps to 5.5, but Listening 28 maps to 6.0. This asymmetry reflects ETS's psychometric calibration of each section. Use the tabs below to see the exact conversion for each section.

What does each TOEFL band actually mean in terms of English ability (CEFR descriptors)?

ETS aligns the new TOEFL scale to CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), the international standard used by universities and employers worldwide. Each TOEFL band maps to a specific CEFR level.

CEFRTOEFL BandWhat this level demonstrates
C26.0Near-native proficiency. You can understand virtually everything heard or read and express yourself spontaneously with precision in complex academic and professional settings.
C15.0 to 5.5Effective operational proficiency. You can understand demanding, longer texts and their implicit meaning. You produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects and use language flexibly for academic and professional purposes.
B24.0 to 4.5Upper intermediate. You can understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics. You interact with a degree of fluency that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible without strain for either party.
B13.0 to 3.5Intermediate. You can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters. You can deal with most situations likely to arise while traveling. You produce simple connected text on familiar topics.
A22.0 to 2.5Elementary. You can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of immediate relevance (personal information, shopping, local geography, employment). You communicate in simple, routine tasks.
A11.0 to 1.5Beginner. You can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases aimed at satisfying concrete needs. You can introduce yourself and ask and answer simple questions about personal details.

What is the TOEFL dual-reporting period and how does it affect me?

ETS announced that a dual-reporting period runs from January 2026 through January 2028. During this two-year window, every TOEFL iBT score report includes three components: your CEFR level, your new 1-6 overall and section scores, and a comparable 0-120 overall score calculated from the midpoint of the equivalent range.

The dual-reporting period exists because universities need time to update their published admissions requirements from the old scale to the new scale. During this window, admissions officers can evaluate applicants using whichever scale their institution has adopted, without requiring test-takers to perform any manual conversion.

As a test-taker in 2026, this means your score report works for every university regardless of which scale they currently list. You do not need to convert your score or explain the format change in your application. The report does that automatically.

After January 2028, ETS plans to stop including the comparable 0-120 score. From that point forward, score reports will show only the new 1-6 band scores and CEFR levels. Institutions are expected to have updated their requirements to the new scale by then.

How do new TOEFL band scores compare to IELTS scores?

ETS publishes an official TOEFL-to-IELTS comparison based on their concordance research. This table shows the approximate equivalence between IELTS scores and the new TOEFL 1-6 band scores, broken down by section.

What are the most common TOEFL score conversion mistakes?

✗ Wrong: "Just divide by 20 to get your band"

✓ Right: The conversion is NOT linear

ETS explicitly notes that "two half bands on the 1-6 score scale can contain different numbers of score points on the 0-120 score scale." Band 5.0 covers 12 points (95-106) while band 6.0 covers only 7 points (114-120). Simple division produces inaccurate results.

✗ Wrong: "100 = 5.0 exactly"

✓ Right: 100 falls within the band 5.0 range (95-106)

An old score of 100 does map to band 5.0, but so does 95 or 106. The ETS comparable score of 100 is the midpoint of this range, not an exact boundary. A student scoring 96 and a student scoring 105 both receive band 5.0.

✗ Wrong: "Add your section bands to get the total"

✓ Right: The total is the AVERAGE of section bands, rounded to the nearest 0.5

If your sections are 5.0, 4.5, 5.0, and 4.5, your overall band is the average (4.75), rounded to 5.0. It is not the sum (19.0). This is a fundamental difference from the old system where sections added to 120.

✗ Wrong: "Section scores all convert the same way"

✓ Right: Each section has its own conversion table

Reading 28 maps to 5.5, but Listening 28 maps to 6.0. Speaking 24 maps to 4.5, but Writing 24 maps to 5.0. Always use the section-specific conversion tables, not the overall concordance, when converting individual section scores.

✗ Wrong: "My old 100 score means I would score band 5.0 on the new test"

✓ Right: The score conversion is valid, but the test format changed too

The conversion tables map between scoring scales, not between test performance. The TOEFL 2026 format has entirely new task types (Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Take an Interview). A student who scored 100 on the old format may score differently on the new format because the tasks measure different skills in different ways.

What should I do if my TOEFL score is just below my target university's requirement?

First, check whether your university accepts MyBest scores. TOEFL MyBest combines your highest section scores from all valid tests taken within the past two years, and it is reported on the new 1-6 scale. If your overall band is 4.5 but your best individual section scores from different test dates average to 5.0, your MyBest score may meet the requirement.

Second, check the retake policy. You can retake the TOEFL as early as three days after your previous test. If you are within 0.5 bands of your target, targeted practice on your weakest section can often close the gap in one to two weeks. The PrepDrills TOEFL app provides Eppy AI feedback on every Writing and Speaking response, so you can practice the exact task types that are dragging your score down.

Third, some universities offer conditional admission for students whose TOEFL score is slightly below the minimum. This may involve taking an English proficiency course during your first semester. Contact the admissions office directly to ask about conditional pathways.

If your score is consistently 1.0+ bands below your target despite multiple retakes, consider working with a certified TOEFL teacher. Epic Exam Prep specializes in identifying the specific patterns (phonetic interference, syntactic transfer errors, organizational weaknesses) that hold students at particular band levels and building targeted strategies to break through them.

Frequently asked questions about TOEFL score conversion

The new TOEFL score scale runs from 1.0 to 6.0 in 0.5 increments, for both overall and section scores. This replaced the old 0-120 total scale and 0-30 section scales on January 21, 2026. The new scale aligns directly with CEFR levels (A1 through C2).
An old TOEFL score of 100 falls within the 95-106 range, which maps to band 5.0 on the new scale. This corresponds to CEFR level C1. Per ETS, the comparable score shown on a new-format score report for band 5.0 is approximately 100 (the midpoint of the range).
Band 5.0 or above (equivalent to 95+ on the old scale) is generally competitive for top universities including Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and INSEAD. Band 4.5 (equivalent to 86-94) is accepted by most state universities and many European programs. Band 6.0 (equivalent to 114-120) represents near-native proficiency.
Neither. The 1-6 scale measures the same abilities as the 0-120 scale. The test content changed on January 21, 2026 (new task types, shorter format), but the scoring scale change is a measurement conversion, not a difficulty change.
During the 2026-2028 dual-reporting period, every TOEFL score report includes both the new 1-6 band scores and a comparable 0-120 total score. ETS does this so institutions that have not yet updated their published requirements can still evaluate applicants using the old scale.
The dual-reporting period runs from January 2026 through January 2028. After that date, ETS plans to report only the new 1-6 scale.
Yes. TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the test date. A score from March 2024 onward is still valid in 2026. Scores taken before January 21, 2026 are reported on the 0-120 scale only.
TOEFL band 5.0 corresponds to CEFR level C1 (Effective Operational Proficiency). This means you can understand demanding, longer texts, express yourself fluently and spontaneously, and use language flexibly for social, academic, and professional purposes.
Pre-2026 TOEFL materials teach skills (grammar, vocabulary, comprehension) that still transfer, but the test format changed substantially. New task types include Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Listen and Repeat, and Take an Interview. Practice materials should be updated for these specific tasks.
The overall band is the average of your four section bands (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing), rounded to the nearest 0.5. For example, if your section bands are 5.0, 4.5, 5.0, and 4.5, your overall band is 4.75, which rounds to 5.0.
Yes, TOEFL MyBest scores still exist in 2026. MyBest combines your highest section scores from all valid TOEFL tests taken within the past two years. These are reported on the new 1-6 scale alongside your individual test date scores.
ETS publishes an official TOEFL-to-IELTS comparison. A TOEFL band 5.0 corresponds approximately to IELTS 7.0. A TOEFL band 4.5 corresponds to IELTS 6.5. A TOEFL band 6.0 corresponds to IELTS 9.0. The comparison varies by section.
The highest possible TOEFL score is band 6.0, both overall and in each individual section. This corresponds to the old score range of 114-120 (total) and represents CEFR level C2 (near-native proficiency).
No. During the 2026-2028 dual-reporting period, your ETS score report automatically includes both the new 1-6 band and the comparable 0-120 score. Universities receive both formats. You do not need to manually convert anything.
ETS plans to stop including the comparable 0-120 score after January 2028, at the end of the dual-reporting period. After that date, score reports will show only the new 1-6 band scores and CEFR levels.
